A lackluster performance by Mexico at home is
salvaged by a second-half revival, but T&T could have kept this game to a
draw and the "Tri" cannot be happy with its effort.
Trinidad show early on they will use their
size and height to defend stoutly. The Caribbean side, facing their best chance
to go to a World Cup finals since 1989, defend well, and even start coming
forward after a few minutes. Mexico have much more skill and show it when they
have the ball, which is not often enough. In the 22nd, Trinidad come forward
through Whitley, earning a corner. Mexico passes crisply, but can't get into
position to shoot. The towering Wales-based defender Lawrence marshals his
defense smartly, and needless to say T&T win all the balls in the
air.
In the 40th minute, a through ball splits the defense and Medina is in the box past the keeper Jack. But a sliding Avery just blocks the shot.
Mexico comes out stronger for the start of the second half. But in the 55th, it is Dwight Yorke who sneak in and crosses to Stern John, who sees his shot deflected. At the other end, Lozano, who is playing quite well, shoots wide in the 58th. Yorke comes within inches of scoring on a header off a free kick two minutes later. moments later, Jack saves at the other end, and Lozano almost puts in the rebound with a bicycle kick.
In the 66th minute, Mexico gets the goal it has been seeking. Morales shoots well from the left, Jack saves, but the rebound falls to Borgetti, who scores easilly. Hector Sam comes in late for Trinidad & Tobago, but is unable to make a difference, despite a chance in the 85th. In the 89th, with Trinidad coming forward regularly, Perez scores on another rebound, sealing the game's fate.
