MLS: New England Revolution vs. Chivas USA on 5/13

The Revolution give a glimpse of what they're capable of, as they dispose of a much improved Chivas team, 3-1.

The two teams start out tentatively. Chivas have a new look after a dismal 2005 campaign. New England has the better of the first 10 minutes. In the 13th, though, Chivas shows it has something to show, as Garcia dribbles through, but can't get around Reis. Six minutes later, Chivas adds bite to their bark, as Lochhead coughs up the ball in a dangerous area just outside his own box. Razov grabs it and crosses to Mendoza who controls well and slides it past Reis. Chivas are out to a shock 1-0 lead.
The lead does not last, as the Revs step up a little. In the 23rd Cancela uses his exceptional reading of the game to slip a perfect pass into space in front of Dorman. Dorman side-steps the goalie Guzan and banks the equalizer. Props to Cancela for making the play happen.
Both sides now fight hard for the go-ahead goal, spaces open up and the game becomes quite attractive. In the 41st, Razov is free on the right side, Reis comes out perilously far and misses the striker, who lobs just off target, despite the open goal.
In the second half, the game is evenly matched, Chivas doing particularly well to dispossess the Revs in the final third of the field. In the 53rd, with Chivas seemingly on the back foot, Heaps floats a great ball in from the right. Shalrie Joseph rises majestically to head it home and the Revs have pulled ahead.
But Chivas do not give up, forcing a punch and then a save from Reis in the 55th. Cancela, Parkhurst and Franchino seem to be tiring at the hour mark, but 15 minutes later, they rally. Razov, who has been harrassing Heaps all game, finally gets a yellow in the 83rd, although the foul he is cited for here is non-existent. In the 86th, Joseph receives the ball in the Chivas third. He turns and releases Twellman, who controls very well, spins inside quickly and shoots into the lower corner. That settles it at 3-1.
