MLS: Revolution 4, Salt Lake 1 on Aug. 10
After a series of poor results, the Revolution
dismember the "Real" Salt Lake. Still, the Revolution shouldn't take too much
heart from beating one of the league's worst teams.
It's apparently the battle between Monarchists
and seperatists, and as was the case in the 1770s, the colonials won it. The
game started with the Revolution in charge, but Salt Lake (I'm not going to be
using their royal moniker for fear of wetting myself laughing) has its moments
as time goes by. In the 11th, heaps gets a great cross in and Dempsey muscles
past former Rev Rusty Pierce to score the first. Pierce, who wisely has lost the
long hair and headband look after moving out to straightlaced Salt Lake City,
plays well in this game, but Salt Lake fails to come together as a
team.
In the 16th minute, Cancela sends a
corner kick in, Heaps heads it on to the back post and Twellman finishes with
another header from point-black range. It is quickly 2-0 and Salt Lake's chances
of a win have evaporated. It is almost 3-0 in the 18th, when Ralston's shot is
deflected by Salt Lake goalie Countess and then hits the woodwork. Twellman
pounces on the rebound, but it is saved off the line by a
defender.
The Revolution are completely in
control through the first half hour. But in the 30th minute, the ball bounces
around the box off a corner, then Twellman fouls an attacker at the edge of the
area. Kreis lines up the free kick and puts it perfectly around the wall and
inside the post to make it 2-1. Seven minutes later, Kreis shoots just wide, and
it is briefly possible to imagine Salt Lake scrambling for a
tie.
In the second half, Salt Lake continue
to come forward and the Revs begin to unravel at the back. The spaces soon close
up, however. Dorman misses a great cross in the 58th, and Countess saves twice
in the 62nd.
Heaps is on fire, coming forward
repeatedly and building plays in midfield even. Salt Lake's anemic attack is
unable to exploit his ventures forward.
Reis
makes his only serious save in the 72nd off a Dunseth header. At the other end
four minutes later, Heaps flicks on a corner, and Dunseth unluckily heads
straight into the goal mouth while trying to clear. Andy Williams desperately
tries to clear, but the ball caroms in off the bottom of the
crossbar.
The ref misses a clear handball in
the box by the depressed Dunseth, but the Revs won't need any penalties to win
this one. In classic Revolution fashion, substitute Smith runs onto a terrible
Countess clearance/pass, shoots hard and scores in the 90th minute. Salt Lake
has completely fallen apart, and the Revolution obligingly accept the three
points they have proffered.
